Somnath Temple

Somnath Temple, situated on the western coast of Gujarat at Prabhas Patan, is considered the first Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. It is an epitome of faith, courage, and devotion, having been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times in the past.

According to mythological legends, the Moon God, or Chandra, prayed to Lord Shiva at Somnath to get relief from the curse given by Daksha Prajapati. Lord Shiva then granted him his former glory, and thus the name “Somnath,” or Lord of the Moon.

Historical records indicate that the temple has been invaded numerous times, yet the faith and devotion of the people have allowed them to rebuild the temple each time. Therefore, it has become a symbol of cultural and spiritual strength. The current temple was rebuilt in 1951 with the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Situated near the sea, the temple gives an aura of divinity, where one attains spiritual peace along with the soothing sound of the waves. The evening light and sound show at the temple describes the glorious history of the temple, attracting thousands of devotees every day.
